Marco Santoro is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Bologna. He holds a PhD in Sociology and Social Research (University of Trento), and was formerly a Lecturer in the History of Political Institutions at the Università Cattolica of Milano. He is the author, co-author or editor of 11 books and more than fifty articles. He is a research fellow of Istituto Carlo Cattaneo, and an associate member of the Centre de Sociologie Européenne (Paris). He is a co-founder and co-editor of "Sociologica. Italian Journal of Sociology Online" (www.sociologica.mulino.it) and of "Studi Culturali", both published by Il Mulino. He edits the book series "Cultura in Italia" (Istituto Cattaneo/Il Mulino). He is a member of the Editorial Board of "Cultural Sociology", "Poetics" and "Polis".

- Research interests -

His main research interests are currently in the sociology of culture, the sociology of music, cultural theory, the history and sociology of professions, and the sociology of intellectuals and ideas. He has recently completed a book on sociology and cultural studies, to be published by Il Mulino. He is writing on the concepts of culture and their use in the social sciences;  on the production of culture approach, on the sociology of professions, and on the sociological theory of Bourdieu. Among his other projects is a textbook on music sociology (with Timothy Dowd, from Emory University, Usa). He is also conducting  empirical research in the field of music, in particular on the social, political ad cultural effect of the suicide of Luigi Tenco in 1967, and on the social organization of music life in Bologna (with Paolo Magaudda).
